An Intel MAX 10 FPGA board with six hex displays, an Arduino header and a USB-Blaster built in.
Each lesson runs your own code on the board. Finish its checks to tick it off.
Build the board in the right order, then power it up and check it, as on the bench.
0 of 9 stepsPull the USB cable and anything on JP6. Never work on a live board.
Each fault really happens in the simulation. Trigger one, watch the figure, then read why.
The DE10-Lite carries an Intel MAX 10 10M50, an FPGA with 50,000 logic elements and no processor: a Verilog design becomes the wiring inside the chip. Unlike most FPGAs the MAX 10 keeps its design in its own flash, so it starts in milliseconds with no configuration chip beside it. Around it sit 10 slide switches (up = 1), 10 red LEDs (1 = on), two push buttons that the board debounces for you (pressed = 0) and six 7-segment digits, each with its own eight pins, lit on 0. A 2 × 20 GPIO header and an Arduino Uno header bring out more pins, all at 3.3 V; only the analog pins A0-A5 take 0-5 V, into the chip's own 12-bit ADC. There is 64 MB of SDRAM, an accelerometer and a VGA port too. One USB-B cable powers the board and programs it through the built-in USB-Blaster, from Intel's free Quartus Prime Lite.

Sensors and actuators this board drives, with the real connections.
Anode to D3 through 220 Ω, cathode to GND. Drive it from your design like any LEDR.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| A | D3Wire colour orange |
| K | GNDWire colour black |
A pin gives 8 mA at most: always fit the resistor.
Between D2 and GND. Turn on the weak pull-up for that pin in Quartus and debounce it in your design: only KEY0 and KEY1 are cleaned on the board.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| 1 | D2Wire colour blue |
| 3 | GNDWire colour black |
+ to D5. Toggle the pin at an audible rate (CLK_HZ / (2 × f) cycles per half period) to play a note.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| + | D5Wire colour orange |
| − | GNDWire colour black |
Ends to 5 V and GND, wiper to A0. The op-amp halves it for the ADC, which a design reads through the Modular ADC IP with the 10 MHz ADC clock.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| 1 | GNDWire colour black |
| 2 | A0Wire colour yellow |
| 3 | 5VWire colour red |
A0-A5 are the only pins that take 5 V. Never wire 5 V to a digital pin.
Signal to D9, power from 5 V. The design makes a pulse 1-2 ms long, 50 times a second.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| SIG | D9Wire colour orange |
| V+ | 5VWire colour red |
| GND | GNDWire colour brown |
The servo's current peaks come from USB too: if the board resets when it moves, power it from JP6 and a bench supply.
VCC to 5 V, Trig to D7, Echo to D8. Time the echo pulse in clock cycles.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| VCC | 5VWire colour red |
| Trig | D7Wire colour yellow |
| Echo | D8Wire colour green |
| GND | GNDWire colour black |
Echo is a 5 V output: put a divider (1 kΩ over 2 kΩ) between it and D8, or the pin sees more than its 4.12 V limit.
3.3 V, GND, and SCL and SDA on the Arduino header's I2C pins.
| Part pin | Board pin |
|---|---|
| VCC | 3V3Wire colour red |
| GND | GNDWire colour black |
| SCL | SCLWire colour yellow |
| SDA | SDAWire colour blue |
There is no I2C peripheral: your design needs an I2C master of its own, or a Nios V soft processor.
